Doesn’t it seem like every single person around you is bubbling over with soooo many wonderful ideas for kicking off the new year?
A resolution (or ten), inspirational quotes, tackling big projects and on and on and onnnn.
SuthinGirl loves it; she eats it up. No, that’s not quite true. It makes me nuts. A little. But I love the energy and spirit of renewal behind it all.
Girls, I’m gonna level with you. I don’t have much to offer in the way of exercise regimens or clean eating suggestions. That just ain’t my calling.
And anyhow, what’s the use in feeling good if you don’t look amazing, too? Ta-da! That’s where the magic of SuthinGirl comes in!
Forget the rest of the house. For now let’s simply focus on priorities. Deep breath. We’re going to clean out and organize our closet and our handbag. Exhaaaale!
Terrified? I hear you. Let me assure you, I’m in the same boat. Let’s just say a Holiday Gift Guide doesn’t write itself. I’ve become a piler. A person who piles. I am NOT a person who piles. I am a person who hangs things up! Ugh.
Okay, let’s get to it. Pour a glass of wine, crank the SuthinGirl Happy New Year! Playlist and get going!
Toss anything that looks like it needs to be tossed. Donate anything not bringing you joy. Hang things up by color. As you do, think about new combinations.
‘Merchandise’ your accessories…in other words, cute pumps placed together with toes pointed out, scarves and your fave jewelry displayed.
If I can’t see everything at once then I tend to forget I have it, so I’ve gotten creative about repurposing pretty baskets and using my best accessories as closet décor.
Vauccum, dust, spray your favorite scent.
Doesn’t that look nice? It’s like you have your own little boutique!
Next up is your handbag. Are you like me? Did oodles of gift receipts, pastel colored valet stubs and cute little wrapped mints from fab restaurants mysteriously set up residence in every nook and cranny of your handbag somewhere between the first of December and today?
Ladies, there’s only one way to do this. Dump everything out onto a table. Shake your bag over the trash can and get rid of all those weird little specks and crumbs that come out of nowhere. Now, we reload. But this time we’re only putting back in what we really need!
All you really need to carry is your driver’s license, debit card, credit card, health insurance card, a $20 bill and a blank check.
Do your fingernails. And your toenails. Funny how this one little task will make you feel so much more in control of your life and ready to tackle any big task! I love looking down at my fingers as they race across the keyboard and admiring the shiny deep pink on my nails. Happy!
I do my own nails because for some strange reason it gives me joy. Also I’m totally ADD or maybe OCD (or both?) so I love to change the color often and hate when there’s even a tiny chip in the polish. Can’t stand that! So I know the best goodies to stash at home for when you want to give yourself some TLC:
Deborah Lippmann polish remover smells like lavender. For reals. And one little mitt takes off all ten nails worth of polish. Is it a bit of a splurge? Mmhmm. And totally worth it!
My fave color polish of the moment is Chanel Le Vernis Nail Colour in Désirio. Honestly, Chanel polishes go on so smoothly and the colors are always elegant and on-trend. You can’t go wrong.
My forever fave topcoat is Essie ‘Good-to-Go.’ Stays shiny for weeks like a gel mani, dries in a minute (seriously), doesn’t chip, comes off easily with nail polish remover. LOVE it!
I love the fragrance and rich texture of Deborah Lippmann’s ‘Steppin’ Out’ lotion! It softens my feet (and hands!) better than anything else I’ve tried. And you know how I love my products!
The relative quiet of January is the perfect time to embark upon a new book or a new TV series. I love binge watching a series. Even though it’s no longer running, I’ve heard amazing things about Showtime’s Dexter from two of my best girlfriends. And there are eight seasons to watch! Woohooo!
Can’t tell you how excited I am that I’ve got all of season two of Showtime’s The Affair saved up to savor! And if you haven’t seen Outlander on Starz, OMG. (The book series by Diana Gabaldon is an incredible journey I highly recommend!)
Call a girlfriend and make lunch plans someplace new. Reach out to your ‘couple friends’ and set up a double date or two. After all, you’ve got a glossy mani/pedi, new outfit combos ready to go, a lighter-than-air handbag and a new book or TV series to dish about!
I wish you a very Happy New Year! You deserve the best and most beautiful things life has to offer! I am humbled by and grateful for your friendship and stellar company as we embark upon this SuthinGirl adventure together!
